Fasting To 40: Find Your Purpose In A World Of Distractions

Throughout my whole life, I’ve always liked to have a general focus and direction in life. Maybe the first 37 years I wasn’t dreaming about my purpose but I did have a direction that led me toward my purpose.

I bet we were all like this for the most part. Focused, and direction driven even though not totally intentional.

I use were because, like most moms, dads, and adults, after you check all the pre-midlife boxes, then what do you do? Wait to retire as the next big box to check?

That sounds dreadful!

In my case, which you can probably relate to. Over the years, I’ve always stayed on track with a clear focus and direction. It went something like this.

K-12, being a solid student, learning social skills, and how to go off into society. ✅

In college, my focus was to get my diploma all while learning and managing this new freedom I had. ✅

Then throughout my 20’s was getting married ✅ and building my career.✅

Then starting a family. ✅

And then WHAT? After you check all the “big” life boxes on what to accomplish and what society says you should do. What do you do after that?

Nobody talks about this part.

There’s no next step after the somewhat burdensome but lovely “American Dream” is accomplished.

I’ve noticed that this can be a tough spot where folks tend to lose motivation and start looking for happiness and fulfillment in things outside themselves through distraction.

The focus shifts to climbing the corporate ladder, getting little Jonny into the best soccer club, and buying that brand-new boat.

This is where we can fall asleep, lose our own direction, not even realize our dreams, and wake up in the matrix of shoulds, expectations, and distractions.

I, like many mothers of little kids, at one point in the not-too-distant past, lost myself and my direction through distraction.

My major distractions were between babies, toddlers, new jobs, and COVID restrictions.

I mean, who had time to follow a dream? So I found myself taking the easy but unfulfilling route and started looking outside of myself for direction also known as distraction.

One little rabbit hole I do want to address here is; distraction is different than responsibility. I actually believe responsibility is the cream de la creme of a life filled with purpose.

Taking care of your kids, bettering yourself in your career by a promotion, enjoying a family boat, taking on a community project, or volunteering at your kid’s school or soccer club is a great service to others.

But, here’s what I’ve observed as a “sticky” point.

Just as long as you do those things out of the service to others and not to distract yourself, and feed your ego.

The ego loves a good distraction.

OK, now back to our regular scheduled program on finding your purpose and not distractions.

Great examples of people who encompass a lot of responsibility, try to keep their ego out of it, and ensure their direction is to serve others (because God knows they don’t need the money) are people like Oprah, Tony Robbins, and Taylor Swift.

Yes, they’re extremely rich and to me, that’s proof that you can be abundant, do what you love, and be in service to others. If it was all for the money, they would have retired long ago.

But how do you find your own direction to your purpose? Or what some call, your True North?

Here’s my busy mom of two, point of view, on how that is done.

  • You have to ask the higher power of your choosing for your direction
  • Which will be tied to your purpose
  • Is always rooted in service
  • And will be a big responsibility relative to you

Using my situation as an example here’s how it’s going for me;

Asked For Direction: I asked the universe/God to guide me toward my purpose. This took several months but looking back, that whole time, there was a little voice inside of me that kept saying it was tied to my longtime intermittent fasting practice.

Tied To My Purpose: Usually something you know a great deal about. That was definitely the case for me. One day, while shaving my legs in the shower, months after asking and asking and continuing to ask “What is my purpose” The MOMFast popped into my head.

Rooted In Service: Then the inspiration flooded in for the next several months. Creating my 21-Day Project, Youtube channel, and TikTok channel all to help people understand the ins and outs of Intermittent Fasting. I can say, I’m truly doing this for the love of doing it and not for the outcome.

Large Responsibility: I’m still building this program. I know the timing will be right when millions of busy moms look to me for guidance. I have faith and a deep knowing because of how The MOMFast came to me in this intense and clear-as-day, inspiration. I’m currently in the ramping stage of increased responsibility.

You may be saying, “Well that’s great Amber, but I have no idea where to even start”.

Well for one, if you have the desire to find your purpose, congrats! That’s the first step. ✅

Here is what I did after I knew I was on the path to finding my purpose.

  1. I asked the right questions;
    • “There’s got to be more/a better way, in life” followed by, “What is my purpose”.
  2. I started journaling. I just started and figured out there’s no wrong way to do this. This is part of the listening process once you ask the questions.
  3. I started meditating. There are many ways to do this and I just started with the one that sounded appealing to me first. I now do it in a ton of different ways. This is also part of the listening process once you ask the questions.
  4. I started paying attention to my thoughts. I’ve read and studied a ton of material on the power of the mind and I think this quote by Lao Tzu is the best way to sum this up
    • “Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny.”
  5. I read and read and listen to audiobooks and podcasts;

And that is what started it all! I could write hours and hours about this and quite frankly, I’ve spent hours on writing this blog post.

It was really hard to structure my thoughts here. It actually took me 2 days of allotted blogging time to write this. So if any of you are editors and have feedback for me on structure, I’d love to hear it.

I still put this out there because if my goal is to write a book, then, I need to practice. I know I’ll get better and faster as I practice more and more.

Let me know in the comments if you have read any of these books and what they did for you.
