Fasting To 40: Time and the $10 Million Dollar Day

Time, Time, Time… this is a thought I have so often. Being that both my husband and I are very “on-time” people; there is always a feeling of pressure in our household. Even though we’re never late.

I think the same thing holds true for folks on the “usually-to-always-late” side. But with a rushed feeling instead of pressure.

What time is it?
We gotta run or we’ll be late.
With a new career, will I have enough time to write this aspirational book?
If I stay put, will I run out of time to accomplish my dreams?
I only have 20 mins to write this blog post.
We’ve got to leave by 2 pm or we’ll get stuck in traffic.
I’m turning 39.
I have 365 days until I’m 40.

Neither sides are pleasant. Whichever side of the spectrum you’re on, it’s safe to say we all want relief instead of pressure and relaxation instead of rush.

Now that I think about it, this whole “Fasting To 40” themed blog is my timeliness-timer-tin coming out.

(I guess I just can’t help myself.)

So another goal to add to my list of turning 40, throughout this year, I desire to use time as an asset instead of an enemy.

I just need to figure out how I do that.

My inkling is that I need to shift my mindset.

Albert Einstein had a magnificent view of time. He wrote,

“People like us who believe in physics know that the distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.”

Do you guys feel his concept here?

I do. I’ve read many books, my favorite being, The Power of Now: by Eckhart Tolle. All about how all we have is the present moment and everything else is gone (past) or an illusion (mind making up the future).

I do think I should let you know, I’m not trying to live in some woo-woo timeless fantasy land.

I know that we have to have time to live orderly in our society.

I understand if there was no time concept, not only could that cause world mayhem like; planes crashing, school… what school? and, baseball games are played at midnight.

But this would also cause a total resentful society with; Sally not showing up for work until she felt like it; Tim eating his breakfast while the plane was ready to take off with 149 souls on board; or concerts starting at dawn.

BUT… I do feel like many of the philosophers do/did.

That time is an illusion. And that it should be used for running a smoother society rather than something to always be measured against personally.

I recently saw this video clip where two people were talking and one asked the other;

“If I gave you 10 million dollars today would that make you happy”?

They responded “Yes”.

The person then went on to help the other visualize what they’d do with that money, and how it would make them feel.

Feelings like freedom, ease, fun, and adventure bubbled up inside of the other person.

They then said, “What if I told you, you could only have it today because tomorrow you’ll be dead”.

The point being;

Why don’t we wake up every day feeling like it’s a 10 million-dollar day?

Instead, so many of us waste it. When in fact, if we were faced with 10 million dollars and our last day or no money and we get to wake up again, we’d take the latter every time!

You don’t need the actual money to get the concept. Another day on earth is the most valuable thing we have.

I loved that concept so much that since I’ve seen that clip, I wake up and say “Thank you God for this 10 million dollar day”.

And that simple mantra is already helping shift my mindset on time.

It’s helping me remember to enjoy life more. Don’t rush. Don’t focus on the money. Take the pressure off. Instead remember, that today is more valuable than 10 million dollars so don’t waste it, be thankful for it.

This mantra has also helped me keep my distance from life’s little annoyances like,

There’s no parking.

Spousal disputes.

My 6-year-old daughter’s slower-paced living.

I take a deep breath and remember, it’s that’s ok because today is a 10 million dollar day.

So here’s the start of my quest to stop using time as a personal standard.

Waking up, thanking God for this 10 million dollar day.

My goal is for my feelings around time to become softer.

Learning from my 6-year-old daughter, slash, my “how to not rush teacher”, being the little Pisces she is; to slow down and play in the dirt before putting your shoes on.

Who knows what else I learn as I take the rigidity off of time? But you better believe I’ll keep you posted.
