How to Talk to Teens About Mom’s New Intermittent Fasting Practice: Without Eye Rolls or Body Complexes
Intermittent fasting is a great way to improve health and maintain a healthy weight, but talking about it with teenagers can be a challenge and why, you, as the mom, want to start this practice.
As a busy mom, you want to ensure your teenagers understand why you’ll be doing this practice to ensure, they don’t develop a body complex around you being fasted.
Here are some steps you can take to talk to your teenagers about intermittent fasting:
Step 1: Be Honest and Open
Don’t start without telling them you’re going to start.
Start the conversation by being honest and open about why you want to try intermittent fasting.
Explain how it can help you with your health, anti-aging benefits, and weight management, and emphasize that it’s not a fad diet or a quick fix. That it’ll be your lifestyle going forward.
Avoid using language that implies that your body needs fixing or that there’s something wrong with your weight.
Step 2: Discuss Their Concerns
Give your teenagers the opportunity to ask questions and express their concerns.
Be prepared to answer questions like “Is it safe?”, “Will it make me hungry all the time?”, and “Will it make me lose weight too?”
Help them understand that intermittent fasting can be a healthy lifestyle choice, but it’s not for everyone.
Step 3: Emphasize Body Positivity
Remind your teenagers that everyone’s body is different and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to health and wellness.
Encourage them to love and appreciate their bodies, no matter their size or shape.
Emphasize that intermittent fasting is not about you achieving a certain body type or weight, but about improving health and well-being.
Step 4: Lead by Example
Show your teenagers that you practice what you preach by following a healthy and balanced intermittent fasting plan.
Avoid making negative comments about your body or weight, and focus on the benefits of intermittent fasting, such as increased energy and mental clarity.
Step 5: Encourage a Healthy Lifestyle
Remind your teenagers that intermittent fasting is just one aspect of a healthy lifestyle for you.
And that with them being so young, they’d benefit the most by eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and managing stress in healthy ways.
Emphasize that good health is about balance and moderation, not deprivation or extremes.
By following these steps, you can talk to your teenagers about intermittent fasting without giving them a body complex and will hopefully avoid some eye rolls as you practice your new lifestyle.
Remember to lead by example, encourage body positivity, and emphasize the importance of a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
